AI industry groups and even some author advocates are urging an appeals court to block a massive copyright class-action lawsuit against the AI company Anthropic. They argue the lawsuit, which involves up to 7 million potential claimants, could financially ruin Anthropic and set a dangerous precedent for the entire AI industry.
The groups claim the district court judge's "rushed" decision to certify the class failed to properly analyze complex ownership issues, making it a poor fit for a class action. They warn that such immense financial pressure could force Anthropic to settle rather than resolve key legal questions, threatening innovation and investment in AI.
