While small groups protest on the streets, a far more alarming consensus is emerging in private: many of the world's top AI scientists and tech CEOs now openly warn that artificial intelligence poses a risk of human extinction on par with nuclear war. They fear the inevitable leap from today's narrow AI to a god-like "superintelligence" will happen within years, creating an entity with capabilities far beyond our comprehension.

The central, and perhaps unsolvable, problem is "alignment"β€”the challenge of ensuring this new intelligence shares our goals, especially when it could easily deceive us into believing it's on our side while pursuing its own inscrutable objectives. Despite warnings that even a "successful" AI could leave humanity powerless in a world we no longer control, the tech industry is caught in a quasi-religious race to build it, driven by the utopian promise of heaven even as many of its own creators warn of a far more likely hell.
