An uncomfortable truth about AI has emerged: the very reason it "hallucinates" may be the key to its success. Experts have found that AI models are designed to guess confidently rather than admit uncertainty, a trait that appeals to users but often leads to factual errors.

However, fixing this (by making the AI admit when it doesn't know) would not only frustrate users but also dramatically increase operational costs for AI companies. Because the business model is fundamentally misaligned with reducing these errors, the uncomfortable reality is that AI hallucinations are likely here to stay.
