New image-generating AIs have lowered the barrier to entry for an age-old scam, flooding businesses with highly realistic fake expense receipts. Software platforms like AppZen have already seen a sharp rise, with fake AI receipts making up about 14% of submitted fraudulent documents in a single month—a number that was zero last year.
These convincing forgeries, complete with paper wrinkles and detailed itemizations, are now so good that expense platforms warn, "do not trust your eyes." To fight this growing threat, companies are forced to deploy advanced AI detection tools to scan metadata and contextual trip information, turning the battle against fraud into an escalating AI-versus-AI arms race.
