AI company Anthropic has settled a class-action lawsuit filed by authors who accused it of illegally training its AI assistant, Claude, on their copyrighted books. The settlement follows a mixed court ruling which found that while AI learning from books is a "fair use," Anthropic had still engaged in piracy by sourcing millions of its training books from unauthorized online libraries.

This agreement allows the company to avoid a December trial that would have determined damages for the piracy, a figure that could have potentially reached billions of dollars.
